Mt. Lassen/Burney Falls

This past weekend, I led a small group of 6 bikes, 9 people to Mt. Lassen and Burney Falls. We left on Friday morning under the threat of rain in that area. Prior to leaving, I googled the Red Bluff area for places to have lunch and found Jack the Ribber. Their moto is "if you don't like ribs, you don't know Jack." We had the place to ourselves and found it to be clean and neat, a little funky in the decor, and good ribs. I intended to head East on Hwy. 36 towards Mt. Lassen but had to re-route due to the threat of thunderstorms on the mountain. We instead slabbed it all the way to Burney where we stayed for two nights. We got a little wet getting there but not bad. Saturday the weather started clearing out and we went to Burney Falls. I have always heard of it but never been there. I was impressed at what a pretty place it was. We hiked around the area for a while and then left for a loop ride I googled mapped to Susanville and back to Burney. What beautiful country we saw there. Sunday we went up Mt. Lassen like I originally planned but only in reverse. It's beauty did not disappoint. We stopped at Helen Lake for a short snowball fight and checked out some of the bubbling mud pits and then took Hwy. 32 to Chico. After lunch there, we slabbed it all the way back home. A great ride. Almost 800 miles door-to-door for me.

Re: Mt. Lassen/Burney Falls

I love that area.
Growing up thru gradeschool in Anderson we went to Lassen often. Winter to play in the snow and summer to escape the valley heat. Mom was a Jr. Ranger at Lassen Park when she was young.

Somewhere I have a picture of me sitting on Dad's car with Burney falls in the background. That was 1957 or so, I think.
No way to get a car that close now. A bike maybe... if ya can sneak it by the rangers.

Thanks for the writeup.
Brings back memories. Need to go back for a ride thru.

Nice pics with the snow. I will be there July 18/19. Never been in that area, but your pics want me go tomorrow

You're right..our timing was a bit off. We stayed two nights in Burney at the Charm Motel. It was ok...but I saw the Shasta Pines and it looked a little nicer. The Outpost was good for dinner but has limited seating. If you plan to eat there, I would stop in and make a reservation in the morning or the day before. I did not see a BBQ place in town. I highly recommend going to Burney Falls. There is a short loop trail that takes you down to bottom of the falls and then back up to the parking lot....about 3/4 of a mile or so.

I hope you made it to the three falls in Mc Cloud also. They're even easier to get to.

Re: Mt. Lassen/Burney Falls

Yup, a beautiful area. Our family spent summers fishing and skiing Lake Britton and visiting the Falls in the "way back when" days. I should plan a ride there sometime soon.

I have not been to the falls at McCloud. I will put that on my list of things to do.
