Australia -
I got asked the question in another thread and thought I'd pop the info in here for anyone interested in coming to Oz - happy to answer any specific questions if can - or point you in the right direction if I cant
![]() Cheers Coxy Just like the US... Oz is a big place with many great rides and if you were anything like me and Juls we were spoilt for choice and just didnt know where to start.... Here are a few suggestions for some great rides through different parts of Oz Tasmania (TAS) -ALL OF IT!!! Magnificent roads - friendly people - can be circumnavigated in a few days or take 2-3 weeks and you still wont see all of the great places ... home of the Tassie Devil (of Taz if you are a Warner Bros Cartoon Fan) good PDF ride guide to many many rides in Tassie here Victoria (VIC) - spectacular quality of roads - (mostly) - however be aware that the Vic. Police force recruits ex Nazi war criminals and their descendants to ensure no one has fun and pays at least 10% of their family income p.a. in additional traffic fines to ensure the state can pay for its art installations in the cities. ![]() Great ocean road - similar to PCH - (Google: Bells Beach, 12 Apostles etc) also anywhere in the Vic Alps (as long as it is NOT winter) Google Maps: Mount Hotham to Harrietville, Victoria (Extreme Twisty) New South Wales (NSW) - Cooma to Bombala to Cann River to Mallacoota - again great roads open & winding to tight twisty but be warned it is COLD!!! in winter and can get bloody hot in Summer - good riding all year round but Best in Spring (Mar-May)Also if you want the highest ride in Oz try the Alpine Way (only in Summer/Spring!!) great twisties, open flowing corners, low traffic, low enforcement - go from Cooma to Adaminaby -Tumut - Wagga Wagga (where Juls was born and raised - lovely inland city in heart of rural district on the Murrumbidgee RiverWisemans Ferry round Trip - CLASSIC!!! - -start at Windsor just outside Sydney can be bumpy and or slippery in places as goes through lots of forests that can keep sun off the road - but a great ride for the twisty enthusiast... http://goo.gl/maps/WKat2 Queensland (QLD) - Hot - humid and Wet in Summer - best visit in July/August (our winter/Dry) Atherton Tableland - Gillies Highway - 100 corners in 30 miles (50 Kms) and most of those are in the last 15 miles down a mountain (or up if you decide to turn around and do it again ![]() http://goo.gl/maps/hf28y South Australia (SA) - Warm and Dry - mostly flat but some good rides around the Adelaide Hills e.g. Magill Road http://goo.gl/maps/zR6hi Western Australia (WA) Bigger, drier and hotter than Texas..... very diverse landscape but predominantly desert and beaches that go for miles lots of goat roads up north for ADV riders .... except.... Margaret River Region - The "Gourmet Food and Wine Bowl of WA" Wineries, Cheeseeries (?), Breweries, Restaurants, Pubs, Surf, etc etc Here is a really nice ride from "Margs" to Nannup-Bridgetown-Balingup and back to Nannup - very green, twisty, old growth forrests, chocolate, coffee, wine, pubs, etc etc ![]() PS if you like the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale ![]() Cheers Coxy |

Spent a year in Auzzi way back in the day, way, way, back. You could still get a 10C beer. Know many Auzzies from a BlackBird web site I'm a member of.

Re: Australia -
+1 on Great info.
here is a question: IF a person had 2 weeks to spend there(a little less then 2 weeks because of flyin out n back of course) and ride, what would you say would be the best(no off road) place/places to ride in that amount of time? all things bein equal. in other words, surfers might like to ride the coast and mountain climbers might like to ride where they can climb mountains, but if you take those factors out of the equation and put in riding only(twisties, hills, beauty of Australia, no LEO problems, etc.), where should one fly in and out and where should we ride? i know it's probably a tough question to answer. if an Australian asked me where they should go in the U.S. i would say you could ride the mountains from Colorado to Glacier and see a lot, experience a lot, and have tons of fun plus........ of course people could disagree with me, but having traveled the U.s> by car, and am now doin it by bike, i think the trip i recommend for here is perfect ![]()

Mate I'd love to tell you where to go (Aussie joke) and Yep the answer is "how long is a piece of string... .. but If it was me and I only had two weeks - I'd check out Tasmania - lovely people - great food -plenty of local breweries/wineries and the local seafood is some of the best in the world!!but the main attraction is - Motorcycle heaven! Did my first bike tour there when I was 17 on a mighty Cb250 parrallel twin had a blast touring with my elder brother (he had the "big" CB360)! I'd suggest visiting Tassie in our Summer (Dec-Feb) it's warm but not hot as it is closer to South Pole - or in Spring (March-May) - mild weather - not hot - not cold. - heaps of great roads, lots of history (one of the first convict settlements in Port Arthur is still standing from the early 1700's, scenery ranges from beaches to mountains with temperate rainforest in unspoilt wilderness competing with hydro-electricity, mining and agricultural interests (google Franklin Dam protest if you want more info) Had a quick look on google and found a few motorcycle hire/tour companies and borrowed some of the above photos from their vast range of customer pictures - this 10 day self guide tour for around AUD$3,000 looks like it might suit you down to the ground but do your own personal investigation as there is bound to be more than one Hope that helps Cheers Coxy PS for more info on rides to google in Tazzie check out the PDF link in the first post in this thread. |

All of Tasmania is a great ride but by staying there you'll miss out on a lot the mainland has to offer. If you're a first time visitor, Melbourne has a lot to offer, as does Sydney & the Gold Coast. I wouldn't bother with the Great Ocean Rd but head north from Melbourne through the alpine regions of Victoria & NSW then follow the coast to Sydney. A trip on the Manly ferry to view Sydney Harbour is a must & maybe a ride to the Blue Mountains. Sydney to Brisbane criss crossing the Great Dividing range is heaven, as are the hinterland roads of Queensland.
So much to see, so little time. Anyone looking for a guide around Sydney or ride route info along the eastern states i'm only too happy to help out. Just send a PM. Pete.

Pete.[/QUOT Totally agree Pete so many to choose ... wherever you go you'll have a great time. Tassie is a place Id really like to do again but Juls thinks it's too cold for her even in summer... Hence we are riding the desert in Texas in August!!!
