Re: GPS & Geocache Adventure?

I realize this is digging up an old thread, but I just got into geocaching!!! I'm having a blast!! Found 10 so far in 4 days!! All on my scooter!

I decided to get into geocaching so my hubby and I will have a destination to go to!! I figure I'll just make a route with several geocaches along it!! Just go from on to the other and so on!!!

Cool! You will have to leave Pashnit stickers at the cache boxes! I still think it would be a fun thing to do! Maybe at Sopiago.

Re: GPS & Geocache Adventure?

I think I should make my own pashnit card though!! People may think I'm Tim if I leave the cards I have!!! I'll try making some with my user name on them and leave those!!!!

It is alot of fun!! Today I got a Travel Bug and I'm going to take it with us next weekend when my hubby and I ride to Redding!!!!

This is a travel bug!! It actually can be attatched to anything, this one is attatched to a key chain!!

Re: GPS & Geocache Adventure?

Hi everybody!

This is my first Pashnit post!
I found the site several years ago (pre board), but came here today at Tim's invite to vote on pictures for the next calendar.

The GPS section caught my eye, as I have just recently RAM-mounted my Garmin Legend to my bike.

I have owned the unit for almost 3 years now, bought for playing the Geocaching sport under the guise of Maps 'n Motorcycles. I love the sport. I have to admit I am more comfortable in street clothes and proper footwear, so it is kind of cumbersome on a bike. Rest stop caches are good for breaks, though, provided you are not wearing puke-yellow Aerostitch!

But my reasons for mounting my GPS on my bike was mostly because it was a simpler (and more fun) solution for a accurate speedometer than a bicycle computer.

My Geocaching handle comes more from my love of both maps and motorcycles. I did not realize my cartographic lust until I stumbled on those dashed lines on topo quads that lead to lonesome peacefulness amongst the trees.

I have yet to read this entire thread, but I am looking forward to it!!!

Thumbup Re: GPS & Geocache Adventure?

Hey y'all - I'm a newly registered member, although not new to Pashnit.com. I just posted a reply to another guy asking about a GPS for his bike and then found this thread.

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE OUT THERE GEOCACHING VIA MOTORCYCLE.

I'm thrilled to discover there are others. Anybody want to get together for some caching?

Mookie

Here's a copy of the GPS post I put up:

Hey there -

I switch between two GPS solutions for my bike, depending on current activities, and have been thrilled with the results.

My travelin' GPS is a Magellan Roadmate 800. It's a regular "car" GPS that includes auto-routing, trip optimization (a VERY cool feature), voice directions, touch screen, etc. BUT it uses a rechargable battery so I don't have to hard-wire it to my bike. I actually carry it with me for both work & personal travel, moving it from vehicle to vehicle as needed. I bought a RAM Handlebar Mount Kit that I converted to a quick release model so that I can move it from bike to bike or just plain remove it when I want. The battery usually lasts for about 4-6 hours, more if I turn off the audible directions or dim it at night. If possible I recharge it at stops. It also contains a 4GB hard drive, and supposedly plays MP3s and shows photos but I've never used either of those features. I've had it for about a year and have been very happy with it.

My playin' GPS is a Garmin GPSMAP60CSX. I use it for geocaching. I also have a handlebar mount for it, too. Riding & caching - two great things that go great together.

Thanks for listening.

Re: GPS & Geocache Adventure?

www.geocaching.com has some info on this also.

If anyone needs a good handheld GPS for this, I have one for sale.
