Rate your digital camera!

It's not photo's of bikes but what you shoot them with.

Now Dave posted the following about the camera I want to buy.

"It was taken with a Panasonic Lumix FZ10 with a Leica lens. I think the FZ10 has recently been replaced with the FZ20 but there are probably more FZ10s to be had.

Wonderful camera with good auto functionality and a great set of manual options. I prefer to have full control over my shots so I really like the manual features. Best bang that I could find for my buck a little over a year ago. I still think it's one of the best in the sub $500.00 market.

The Leica lens is what really makes this camera. 35 to 420mm optical zoom with F2.8 throughout the entire range. Razor sharp images and it also has image stabilization."

I currently use a really old 1.3 megapixal Sony Cybershot. I want the Panasonic for the 12x zoom and the ability to take 4 shots really fast. I want to photograph all the wild life we have in Sonoma and Marin Counties. Also to take pictures at the races where it doesn't look I'm a mile away. With the ability to set the camera to take sequenitial (sp) photos I want to be able to show guys at Sears Point going from one side to the other in a turn.

Only thing holding me back is a part time job. I retired from the Post Office and that doesn't really leave me enough extra money for toys. I do have an interview soon though.

So what do you use and whats the best thing about it?

My digital is a Casio QV-3000EX. Old 3.3 mega pixel pig. Price: Free

TheKaiser gives it 5 out of 5 stars.

I'd love one of these

Re: Rate your digital camera!

I don't have much digital experience. I have only owned one digicam so far, but I like it a lot. It's a Canon Powershot A 75. It's a 3.2 mp, so the pictures I've been told are about equal to 35 mm pics at the normal print size if taken at full resolution. I'm not much of a photographer, and the pics are good enough for me. Most of the pics I've uploaded were taken with it.

If I ever do decide to get more into photography, it is an slr, and there are telephoto and wide-angle lenses available for it. It also allows for manual adjustment in all areas. (Not that I know how to do that.) In it's price range, it was rated highest by almost every website I looked at. That's why I bought it.

I bought a 128 meg card, and it holds about 175 pics at full resolution, and I've also got the 32 meg card it came with.

One other feature I like is that it will shoot video (with sound) until your memory card runs out, not just 30 seconds or so like other digi cams. That works out to about 6 minutes of video on the 128 meg card. Good enough for a short ride through a few miles of twisties, don't you think?

Re: Rate your digital camera!

i have an old sony dig that i have taken thousands of pic's with - it's also been bullet proof - i have bang it - dropped it - used it in the rain & the dem thing keeps on going - i was looking at the cannon rebel - i like it - we just got back from a trip to the San Diego zoo - seems like i saw a bunch of the Sony Cyber Shots - it appeared to me to be the camera of choice for the serious users - but it would also be nice to go more compac for the bike trips - just add dollars & buy one of each i guess :bike tommy :bike

Re: Rate your digital camera!

I've had my Sony Cybershot P72 (3.2 megapixel) for about 9 months. I give it about 4 out of 5 stars! Reasonable price $250 with bigger memory card. Close up shots are good, low flash level helps with pictures I take at work of small electro-mechanical assemblies. Battery life is good. I have dropped it 3 times and have not had any problems. Plus takes okay little movies with sound. Only thing is that it is a little thick, doesn't fit in jacket pocket very well. Would buy it again...

I'm using a Vivitar Vivicam3705. It works great for landscapes, but it sucks for action shots. Got it at Target for $89.95.

Re: Rate your digital camera!

My kids just gave me a Olympus D535 zoom for my birthday. I had been looking for somthing small to fit in a pocket for instant use. This unit is only 3.5 X 2.5 X 1.5 in. With a 256 card I get 315 hi res photos. A pro/con is it uses AA batterys. They don't last long but you can get them anywhere and not have to worry about a charger. I have missed photos opps due to discharged batterys and do not want to repeat that error. It only has a lcd sight window so it is hard to set up your shots in direct sunlight. The more I use it the better I get at point and shoot without using the viewer. Around $150 at K MART. Have a nice day. Dick.

Re: Rate your digital camera!

Yet to buy a digital still camera -- for still photos I use a Fuji 35mm 'tourist special' autofocus, and then have the film processing scan it to photo/picture CD. I made the mistake of ordering a 'picture diskette' once and the shots turned out so compressed they were worthless. but the CD's usually turn out well.

I can grab still frames from the Panasonic PV53 mini-DV camera... but they also tend to be over-compressed... which is OK for avatar pics <<<<<<< but crappy for anything 'photographic'.

Re: Rate your digital camera!

I must admit that I really do enjoy all the conveniences of the digital camera. I had a nice 35 mm. Zoom Ricoh Mirri camera that was great too, but the ability to take literally as many photos as I want on multiple memory cards (and multiple batteries) and come home from a day's trip and upload hundreds of my photos to my computer and see them or delete them as I want is convenience at it's greatest. I also enjoy enjoy uploading them to my web site and sending the URL to family or emailing the picture(s). And if the photo(s) needs a little editing or tinkering, that's easy to do too.

I wanted a small camera that was convenient to take on a bike to I ended up with a Nikon Coolpix 4500 when it first came out and it's worked great for my needs. Of course, not unlike the ever changing world of anything electronic, computers, motorcycles or whatever, it simply gets better and better and better so it's fun to wish for some of the really fantastic newer cameras that keep coming out each month.

Some of the great sites on Digital cameras with extensive reviews and fantastic photo examples on each camera, plus side by side comparisons:

Digital Photograph Review:

http://www.dpreview.com/

And the trusted Cnet.com, that has a good grading level and offers best buy suggestions:

Also Steve's Digicam's Review:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html

Lots of cameras I could get excited about, lets see the 12 mega pixel Nikon D2X or maybe the 16 mega pixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II. Fun to window shop and dream.

Re: Rate your digital camera!

For digital, my 4mp Kodak DX6490 does a great job!

The glass and the 10X optical zoom is what initially sold me...hasn't disappointed yet either.
