Some photography of the Marin Headlands.
The Marin Headlands are right on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge. There's an exit immediately after you hit the north edge of it and you get off Hwy 101 and head west, and lo and behold. The Marin Headlands is a very short loop through the old military base. All the gun emplacements from World War II,and even dating as far back as the Civil War are still there. |

Old buildings that supported the gun emplacements. That's the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

Looking over at San Francisco- underneath the bridge at the far side is Fort Point Historical Monument- a Civil War era fort that is still standing that you can tour through.

One of several tunnels through the mountain top to support the gun emplacements

Re: The Marin Headlands to Point Bonita Lighthouse - A Pashnit Ride
Then this comes into view- this is Point Bonita and at left is the the Point Bonita Lighthouse. It's open on weekends for a few hours, and to get there, you walk down a narrow path (which you can see) to the very tip of the point, then walk over a one-man suspension bridge over the Pacific which is crashing into the rocks below!! There's even a ranger there that makes sure only one person crosses at a time.
The Point Bonita Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in the United States that is only accesible by a suspension bridge. |
