Riding in snow and Ice
I need some tips for taking a heavier bike through snow and ice, in the back country.
Here's what I have learned so far: At the first sign of ice in the road, stop, park on it and take a picture. ![]() Travel 10 or 15 miles into a forest like Mendocino National Forest. Hope that the road is open on the other end. ![]() If after many miles, ![]() you reach a portion of the road or pass that is blocked with snow, you should increase your speed, shift into 3rd gear. By lifting the front wheel off the ground you will raise the footpegs above the snowpack and ride your now weighted rear wheel safely accross the obstacle. ![]() I could also use advise on digging and removing 5oo pounds of motorcycle from deep snow, turning it around etc. |

Snow & Ice give me the heebie-jeebies...I'm nervous just thinking about it!
One of those things I never learned how to do, I guess. I do admire your ability, though. |

Re: Riding in snow and Ice
Dis-assemble motorcycle and remove each part to more solid ground, then assemble in reverse order...

Re: Riding in snow and Ice
lol...mmm disassemble the bike...I will need the Arctic survival kit to do that..
consists of a pair of vise grips and a place to put it... Beam me up-oh boy- how many times have I said that while contemplating spending the night in yet another side of the road/trail camp spot! And to that fellow that mentioned skill and moi in the same sentence...well I haven't been riding that long and I've learned most of my skills on the seat of my pants, on the pegs.... ![]() Or trying to remember my name and what day of the week it is. ![]() Is there a way to mount a horizontal shock between the two Jesse side bags-so I don't have to keep replacing the brackets that I twist into pretzels...protects the bike though! This was a deceptively difficult part of the flat wide road... |

Hmmmm... GS.
Doesn't that stand for Ground Scraper? As for snow & Ice... It's "sort of" like deep sand. Get a light bike. Ride it as fast as you can. Lean heavily into the turns and expect it to drift... till the snow packs behind the sliding wheel. Quite fun actually. I did quite a bit of it on my first "real" moto back in the early 70's in Oregon. As seen in this pic with my little brother Jeff on back... (poor quality from an old faded photo scanned in)

Looks like you might want to carry one of those collapsable shovels with ya! Or better yet a snowblower!
