Angeles Crest Highway?
Hello
I will be in California at the end of the week and I had planed to ride from Long Beach to Las Vegas on Friday. We would like to ride the Angeles Crest Highway (SR2), we have been told that it is a great road. I have been told the road may be closed due to snow, or land slide. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Or point me to a location that will give me better road information. Lastly, if the road is closed any suggestions of a scenic route that will keep me off the Intersate? Thanks |

Re: Angeles Crest Highway?
The Crest has ben closed for a very long time due to landslide. But you can still ride a great portion of it to Newcombs Ranch, then backtrack a little and take some other nice canyon roads out towards the desert.
There are many options and many great roads to choose from. How many days are you allowing? How many miles would you like to cover in one day? I can suggest a route to keep you off the slab, but you would need to ride from sun up to sundown! I was in Vegas this past weekend and it snowed right down to the base of the mountains, so be prepared for possible cold and wet situations. I haven't checked the forecast for next weekend yet.

OK, so you picked the right weekend for this. LA is supposed to be partly cloudy and the low 70's. Vegas is supposed to be partly cloudy and the high 70's.
Great timing!

Re: Angeles Crest Highway?
Thanks for the update.
The plan was to make it a day trip. We are flying into LAX at 11am and then it will be off to Vegas. Realistically we are hoping to be on route by 2pm. When we saw that the Angeles Crest Hwy was about 70 miles we though it would make a great detour from the major roads. When I mapped it out taking just the main hwy, basically Hwy 15 the entire way the estimates are 276 miles and 4.5 hours. So when we added in the Angeles Crest Hwy it bumped up the mileage to 298 Miles and roughly 5 hours. This was an easy decision. So if you can recommend anything that will keep us under 6 hours that would be greatly appreciated. On Sunday our plan is to return to Long Beach and we wanted to take in Death Valley. So this plan is 95 North from Las Vegas to Beatty NV, Daylight Pass Rd (374) south to North Hwy (178) south through Death Valley to Shoshone (127) and then to Baker Ca and hook up with Hwy 15. Again comments are welcome. |

Re: Angeles Crest Highway?
I always prefered Bouquet cyn over the crest, but either one is fun unless there is a "recovery" operation going on.

Re: Angeles Crest Highway?
If you want to ride the Crest and a couple other roads, here's a 130 mile putt! Start at the base of the Crest, go up to Newcombs Ranch and get breakfast. Double back a ways and take Upper Big Tujunga to Angeles Forest and out to Mt. Emma Rd. Then chase the 18 to the 15 where you can super slab your way to Vegas. You easily burn a couple hours or more on this stretch.
Best get a heads up on the snow and road conditions on The Crest. Watch your speed too. The Crest is heavily patrolled and it's a "Double Fine Zone".

Re: Angeles Crest Highway?
Thanks everyone for the comments and help.
Pierre, I really had a good laugh when I saw your post, I guess you knew he was my riding partner for this trip. The photo is funny and really not shocking when I thought about it. He tells me that he only took about 2L from you. I hope you charged him at least $5.00 per L.
