Little road trip today - Southern Indiana and Kentucky

This is my first time trying this, so go easy on me!

My trip started from home (Southern Indiana), enroute to Kentucky. The purpose of my mission was two-fold. First, to capture some photographs of familiar surroundings for my Aunt, who will turn 100 next month. We're putting together a surprise video photo album documenting her life, and I wanted to get some sights that she would recognize and remember. Second, to just enjoy a sunny day with deep blue skies on a spring day. Temps were in the mid-50's with a light wind.

So, without further delay, here are my pics...

This elementary school has been open in the same location for close to 100 years. That is a rarity in this day and age. By my count 4 generations of my family went to this school (including my daughter, as we lived in Kentucky briefly for 3 years).

Next, I stopped at a little Methodist church that our family has a long history in. Couldn't resist shooting a shot of the Savage at this stop... Notice the horses in the background, Kentucky is HORSE COUNTRY, and this stretch of highway is home to some large horse farm operations. In hindsight, I should've pulled off and gotten some shots of the horses grazing as they are truly beautiful animals.

Here are some pictures of the church. I love to see old churches. They look so stately and pristine. I could make a career out of just cruising the countryside taking shots of country churches!

After taking these shots, it was off to the nursing home to see my Aunt. She will be 100 on May 31, and although she can no longer live independently, she is still pretty sharp and spry for her age. I only hope that God blesses me with a long life like she has!

This picture is in honor of her and her long life...

I also had to take a shot of the Savage while I was there as my Aunt wanted to see what my bike looked like. She had a bit of a hard time seeing the small screen on the digital camera, but she liked it! Also asked if it had a sidecar for it... She THEN proceeded to lecture me on being careful! What can ya do? You nod and accept the wisdom of those who have lived longer... This shot was of the Savage outside the nursing home.

After visiting with her for a while, it was time to start my trek back to Indiana. I took US 421 into Madison, Indiana and then stopped on the banks of the Ohio River, as I have been wanting to get some pictures of the bike on the riverfront. I think they turned out pretty good, and I even got a shot of a passing towboat/barge in the background...

Here are just a few shots of the river and the Ohio Valley surrounding it. Trees haven't hit full bloom yet, but when they do, the view is spectacular!

Well, there ya have it! I'm not much of a photographer, but I did enjoy these. Sorry if I injected too much personal stuff here, and my next one I'll try to squeeze in some more road shots!!!

Feel free to offer any constructive criticism that might help me out the next time I take some photos on the road!

911 Radioman I wanted to ride down to Madison last Saturday but it was cloudy. I wanted to video a ride down 56 to Vevay with the leaves of the trees for people could see the river. Nice pictures.

Tom,

Very nice. I, too, attended a high school with a long history and am now seeing some third and fourth generations attending there. Too bad this is the last year (my 30th high school reunion), as they are moving into a new facility this fall.

Makes me want to be back there and "riding". Not getting much riding done out here.

I guess I should've elaborated more about the roads in my post. Sorry 'bout that!!! How do you all show the maps that display your "circular" (for lack of a better term) route?

Tom, this is really an enjoyable post. If that's what 100 looks like, not bad, she looks great! Just think, she was born in 1906! , so like in 1924, she was 18 yrs old. Sure is somethin. Thanks for sharing this personal experience with us, that's half the point of doing these, is all of us being able to ride along.

Re: Little road trip today - Southern Indiana and Kentucky

Thanks, Tim. Compared to your adventures, mine certainly pales in comparison, but I do appreciate the compliment.

I think my biggest problem is going to be that I get into the ride so much that I don't want to take the time to shoot the pictures! Guess that's a discipline thing...

I'll tell you this much, I sometimes will spend an hour or two at home just going through the road trip pics here, and my wife will testify to that as I am constantly calling her over to the computer to see the beautiful scenery that so many of you capture. One of our "dreams" is once our kids are grown, we want to buy a Gold Wing and take off together across the country seeing the sights. Until then, its me and the Savage, which isn't a bad bike for a mid-size cruiser with a single cylinder engine!

The camera I'm using is a Kodak DX4530, 5MP. Pretty slick little camera that, I think, takes some sharp photos. I also have a Kodak CX4230 (2MP, I think), that I want to try on the road and see what quality of pictures I can get for online use. If it does well enough, I'll use it on the road and if it gets trashed, I'm not out the good camera!

But so you know, both I and my wife enjoy this site immensely. It's so nice to have a place to visit where you aren't judged by the bike you ride, but rather that you are accepted because you ride. Kudos on a job well done here!

I haven't been in Indiana in over 15 years. Thanks for reminding me how pretty it is back there.

Very nice, Tom. Congrats to your aunt for making it to 100. I had the honor about 12 years ago to meet my great-grandmother, who passed away at 104. I remember in particular her story about her father buying their first car - a Ford Model T, when she was 19 years old.
