Cullasaja River Gorge - North Carolina

I just got back from a three-day ride through Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia tallying over 1200 miles. My favorite part of the ride was a stretch of Highway 64 between Franklin and Highlands, North Carolina through the Cullasaja River Gorge. Located in Nantahala National Forest, the Cullasaja Gorge is an exciting and wild ride. Here’s a few shots I took through there over the weekend.

These two were taken a little further west on Highway 64 in Tennessee along the Ocoee River, a very popular white water recreation area;

Mark,
I just came across this post. It was put up while I was on my trip to New Hampshire. The pics of 64 are great, I love riding in that area, the waterfalls are just beautiful.

Also, when my wife and I first moved to TN from TX we tried out the white water rafting on the Ocoee. This was before the Olympics in Atlanta and the kayak course wasn't put in yet. At the very end of the rafting trip we went into a big hole that threw us up a huge roller. The raft seemed like it went verticle. The young lady sitting in the raft in front of me tumbled backwards into me, taking us both out of the raft. I grabbed her with one hand and the boat with the other as we were going through some pretty good rapids. The others in the boat pulled her in, then me. As I was climbing into the boat I knocked my wife out into the river breaking a bone in her hand. Even with the injury we had a blast. One activity you should try while you're in the area.

Mark,

I really enjoy riding that area. Highway 64 along the Ocoee and Cullasaja is a great ride and beautiful too!

The day I took these pictures it was hot. When I saw all the people out on the river having a blast, I was so tempted to jump right in with 'em. You're right, that is something I've got to do while I'm down here.

I took this shot on the Ocoee on the way home from a ZRX get together in Georgia. These folks looked like they were having a really good time.

I love this one. Someone needs to photoshop the people out and blow it up to wallpaper size.

Sean, I've been meaning to give it a try. Is this better?

Wow that looks like a really nice road .. I'm going to be down in that area in August .. I guess I could take 28 down from Deals gap .. how is the rest of 64 going west ?? sounds like its worth the detour ..

Re: Cullasaja River Gorge - North Carolina

The stretch of 64 between Highlands and Franklin is great, actually that stretch starts further east of Highlands in Brevard. 64 mellows out a but as you go west, but once you cross the TN state line, the stretch along the Ocoee River and Lake Ocoee is great also. If you're going west, that stretch starts around the town of Ducktown. There's also a really great road that runs between Ducktown and Tellico Plains, Highway 68 - that's a great ride too!
