Re: Badger's Yellowstone Photos

Actually went to Craters of the Moon before Yellowstone, but had a problem with the camera and got no photos. So I went back that way after Yellowstone.

I saw no bears in Yellowstone which, being on a bike and somewhat exposed, suited me just fine. I saw plenty of Elk. Every freeekin cager would stop in the middle of the road whenever an elk was within a half-mile of the road. The only bison I saw was outside the park in West Yellowstone. At a place called Oregon Short Line, medium rare and sitting next to the garlic potatoes. Yummy!

I thought Yellowstone would be like Lassen only on a greater scale. Wow, what a greater scale. There are hot springs there that have no names because there are so many. A day and a half is not enough for this huge park.

After Crater Lake, I came down through Klamath Falls to Weed and out through Mount Shasta city through Lassen Park and down Hwy 32 to home. After all the slabbing I did, Hwy 32 was a little slice of heaven.

Thanks for the complement on the photos. I don't think they are quite up to some of what I have seen around here, but then I don't shoot very much either. Hard to improve without much practice. For the curious, it is a Canon A60. 2.3M pixels, was about $250 when we bought it (it is Crystal's camera). Now she is ready to upgrade, so it looks like it will become my camera.

No, I don't really like huge crowds. Particularly huge crowds where there is drinking and riding mixed.

I had never been to Yellowstone, and I was determined to see that. The rest was just what I could fit in on a one week sabbatical away from both work and the family.

Great shots, John!

Love that first one with the steam down the road. Had no idea there was a place called Craters of the Moon. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Badger's Yellowstone Photos

I think Craters of the Moon would be more famous if it wasn't so close to Yellowstone. Yellowstone is Huge and it has both geology and wildlife.

Craters has precious little wildlife. The United States most recent example of a rift eruption, it is still very stark after about 2000 years. It sits in the midst of much larger, more ancient flows that you will see as you ride out to it.

Also, take a look at it with either google earth or google maps with the satellite view switched on. Yes, that pair of black areas is it, not some wildfire. Pretty significant eruption--it would sure grab headlines if it were to happen next week.

Thanks for sharing. I wanted to make it back to Yellowstone this year but it didn't happen. I also noticed one of your pix looked awfully familiar. Not the same I suppose but very similar to the one I took a couple years ago. You've just reminded me why I need to get back there again. Maybe next year.

John didn't note it, but Craters of the Moon is in Idaho. Our nations first nuclear power plant is located near the area. I can't recall the name of the small town, but it is now reknowned for a restaurant called Pickles. Anyway, I read some old newpaper articles the restaurant had on it's walls regarding the nuclear plant. They thought it would bring a big boom to their economy. the area already looks like a nuclear disaster. It's in the middle of nowhere. So, if there was a big boom, no one would know.
