A trip to Chipping Campden , Gloucestershire

Last evening , I took a ride out to Chipping Campden , a town in the Cotswolds that I have been meaning to visit since I passsed through it on a ride with Andy and George some time ago ........

On the way into town .........

Parked up ..........

The High Street , resplendant with many building dating back before the 16th century .........

Some signage , old and new ..........

Time piece .........

and stonework ..........

A solitary bell .........

and modern bench ..........

At one end of the High Street ..........

The Wool Hall , or Market Hall , built in 1627 by Sir Baptist Hicks , a major benefactor in this town .......

Next stop , St James Church ........

Built at the height of the towns' prosperity in 1500 , this medieval church has a 120ft tower , and a rather unusual feature ...........

I've not seen this before ..........

Door.........

and some more views of the church .......

There has been a wedding here today ..........

Almshouses , built in 1624 by Hicks ........

On the wall of one of them .........

Close by , was Campden House , the home of Sir Baptist Hicks .......... which he had burned to the ground , rather than let it into the hands of the Parlamentarians during the Civil War ............ here's the Panzer in front of some of the remains .....

This will soon be open to the public .........

Down a back lane ...........

With the light fading , I made my way home , pausing to watch the sunset across the Gloucestershire countryside .........

Amazing Steve. I can see so much history in those buildings. I see you didn't try any of the creative shots in the mirror or fairing. Doesn't matter. Still great photos.

Steve, these are great photos of my favourite place in England. I still vividly remember The Wool Hall.

Cheers Al

Al,

This has to be the finest example of a Cotswold town .
I'm going to return early one morning when no one is about , so I can take a proper look !!

Okay Steve, now this thread is just plain cool. Really a great exercise in shooting buildings and interesting architecture! Every shot is really fantastic!

Now this may be a dumb question, but what is this roof made of? Just looks cool. Thick.

Re: A trip to Chipping Campden , Gloucestershire

Tim,
Thanks for your compliments .
That roof is called a thatched roof , and there are many fine examples around here , some dating back to the 19th century , others more modern , as this practise still takes places today [ you need special insurance for your roof , but these days the materials used can be treated to minimise the danger of fire ] ............ here is a better explanation ..........

Chipping Campden has to be my favourite place around here , you are just bombarded with fine architecture wherever you look - I particularly enjoy visiting out of season , when you can stroll around all on your own , without having to battle the many tourists who visit this gorgeous little market town .

Great link Steve, thanks! Over here, ya run over to the building supply store, order a truckload of asphalt shingles, get a bunch of tar paper, a good nail gun and go to town. Your history and architecture never ceases to be a source of interest!
