Confused6 Can't miss sights in Death Valley - NEW Pashnit Tour !!

Planning ride to Death Valley - your input on the can't miss stops, sights & scenes?

Here's my list so far: Yes, has to be paved.

1) Scottys Castle
2) Furnace Creek Inn
3) Badwater Basin
4) Salt Pan
5) Harmony Borax Works
6) Dante's View
7) Amargosa Opera House
8) Stovepipe Wells
9) Charcoal Kilns
10) Artist's Palette.

Think we can fit all that in one day?

Stovepipe Wells Hotel seems like a good central place to stay.

That's a pretty full day, Boss.....especially if you're in "photo mode" and the weather is good.
Best pictures are early in the a.m. and late in the afternoon if it's clear.

Dante's Peak and Zabriskie Point are excellent early morning photo ops.
(BTW - Dante's will be and windy at the top - usually)

Oh yeah.....hang on to your a$$ if you have to buy petrol
Furnace Creek is predictable but 'spensive !!

Gotta swing out to Rhyolite for the ghost town / art stuff don't ya? Although it really isn't in Death Valley.

BTW speed limit in most of the park is 45 … just saying.

Also too … little bit of dirt to get to the Kilns as I recall.

Rhyolite is cool

BTW......if'n you're travelling that far east, and "on the cheap" - the Phoenix/Atomic Inn in Beatty is a pretty decent place to stay.

Donna (demenshea) and I stayed there about a year and a half ago (was it that long ?? )
They offer discounts to motorcyclists (Donna told them we would be touting them here on the forum as well so maybe you'll get a deeper deal ), have decent moto-parking, the rooms are Art-Deco funky and the wi-fi is good.
The kids that run the place are a fount of local trivia and lore.....
(They were even talking about setting up Jeep tours through Titus Canyon when things were running a little better).
The Mexican Restaurant we ate at is walking distance to the SE - pretty decent food for the price.

Just watch out for the bats in the trees after dark........

Re: Can't Miss sights in Death Valley - Your input?

Most of my real DV trips have been in a jeep, so the places I like the best, the 'Busa would not be pleased with ... pretty extreme to impossible land barging in some cases.

FYI, unless Stove Pipe Wells has upped the ante some, it is at best a dive motel ... I would camp before I stayed there again. YMMV

Re: Can't Miss sights in Death Valley - Your input?

It's pretty easy to include the Salt Creek wildlife trail and check out the Pup Fish. The access road is less than a mile of well-maintained gravel. The FJR did not object.

The sand dunes are worth a stop, especially if low light angles are present in early morning or evening.

The Ubehebe Crator is pretty cool for a hole in the ground, and can be picked up on the way to Scotty's. Nice pavement going in.

Re: Can't Miss sights in Death Valley - Your input?

I am out there in 10 days. My plan is Scottys Castle (not necessary; just a big house, no big deal) and Titus Canyon (some dirt, a little dirt never hurt anybody).
Forget the Opera House. Instead look at the Hotel there.
Ubehebe Crater is better than the other stuff.
Except for Dante's View. Don't leave out Dante's View.
One day is not enough.
You need 2 maybe.
Artists Palette is good.
Unless you are taking the super tanker RV don't worry about the price of gas.
It won't matter for 4 gallons.

Good info on Ubehebe ... last time I was up there it was not paved but a well groomed dirt road. I would make sure to include that too!

This seems to be the biggest caveat - road construction

You may get access to some places and you may not - Donna and I couldn't get up to the Crater due to "road work".
Best to check the NPS site for local road info prior to departure - that will dictate what you will, or won't, see....
