Re: Anyone have heated grips or gloves??

I have the gerbing gloves and I can confirm that the thumbs do get cold. Heck it doesn't even have to be in the 30's for it not to feel the loving warmth my fingers get. Yes you are right--poor design on that.

My wing has heated handgrips so the combination of the 2 work well but when I'm on the CBR thumbs get cold. I may try to see if Gerbing will re-wire them...Their customer service is very friendly. Heck I may write the owner and see what he suggests.

Re: Anyone have heated grips or gloves??

Man, you guys are making this tough for me. I have been going back and forth, Widder vs Gerbing, for a while now. From what I can gather on this and other discussions elsewhere, the Widder gloves are the better gloves with about a 70 to 30 favoring the Gerbing jacket liner over the Widder vest and/or arm chap combo. It's too bad I can't take each out on a freezing day to compare, but such is life in the motorcycle world. Well, back to the Internet search feature.

Another thought to muddy the waters:

Gerbings takes more current to run and do not put out as much heat as the jacket does not fit close to your body.

While I have thought about Widders arm chaps my arms have never gotten that cold. If I'm starting out in the low 30s I wear a Polartec fleece pull over under the jacket and over the vest. As the temps go up the pull over comes off.

Re: Anyone have heated grips or gloves??

Sorry about the delay there Law Dawg and vnsfxr, it's been a little busy here

I sent an e-mail to Gerbing's. I didn't expect much of a reply since the last time I got _no_ reply which was why I was considering bailing on the Gerbing's. This time though I got an e-mail from "Joe Gerbing" (couldn't tell if it was someones name or a "joe at gerbing" sort of thing). Anyway he said they'd repair the gloves and fix up the thumbs as I suggested (add two more wires on either side of the thumb in addition to the one on the back). It seems the thumbs are either broken or just not working to their full capacity. So I sent the gloves off last week for the wiring and to repair a popped grommet in the left glove. Joe said that I had a lifetime warranty though which is a plus to me that I hadn't realized or remembered.

I do agree with you vnsfxr. My body and arms are usually pretty warm anyway and I can duck down to get out of a breeze if necessary. The hands are pretty much stuck in the wind though and if not protected enough will get nice and cold with no way to stop it. Go with the best product for the hands and the rest will take care of itself. I've added some rough wind screens to my Harley and will be cleaning them up as I figure out the wind direction and whatnot. I'm also getting the heated grips so I should be toasty warm.

I tried the little sticky heating elements on my old bike... write up here they worked really well, but I went for gerbings heated glove liners when i changed bikes. Love 'em. They fit nicely under my gloves and are really warm even in the freezing rain.

Re: Anyone have heated grips or gloves??

Now the only trick is to find gloves that are well insulated on the back of the hand, but have minimal insulation (thickness) on the palm side so the heat from the grips transfers more effectively to my hands.[/quote]

Tim
Go to: www.hotgrips.com and click on "insulated gloves". I got a pretty good pair for about $40.00 if I remember right. They are insulated on the backs and thin on the palms to absorb the heat from the nice warm, toasty heated grips.

Re: Anyone have heated grips or gloves??

My winter setup is:
Gerbings heated gloves
Symtec heated grips
Suzuki V-strom hand guards
Part Number: 57541-06G10-291 Description: COVER,KNUCKLE,L
Part Number: 57341-27G00-291 Description: COVER,KNUCKLE,R

A long time ago in a galaxy devoid of the wonders of electrically heated clothing, there was a product named "Hippo-Hands" Basically a heavy vinyl lined with synthetic sheepskin that covered the handgrips and extended to your elbows. Wonderful for keeping your hands warm, but somewhat limiting in controlling the bikes operation.

Following the basic principle that less air flowing over the hands would reduce the cooling of said digits, I have followed other bike modifiers in adding the handguards. Simply stated, reducing the cold air across your hands is as beneficial as any electrical modification. If it isn't raining, having the handguards on is sufficient to run a lightly insulated glove during temperatures approaching the freezing point

Re: Anyone have heated grips or gloves??

Hee hee...I have heated grips...the cheapy wrap around kind that wire into the bikes electrical system. I bought them for the ST1100 but have never installed them. My fingers never get cold enought to need them, a result I think, of riding a fully faired-motorcycle and using excellent winter-weight gloves.
