1500 Miles in 24 hours

For those of you on the right side of the Mississippi who can't make it out to Sopiago Springs this weekend, you might want to consider this.

Any takers?? Leaving Decatur Alabama around 5am (central time). Meet at the closest point along the route to your location. PM me if you're interested.

Oh boy! That's more miles than Doni and I covered in over a week during our tirp this summer. Of course, we might have been on tighter roads!

Have a great ride, Mark!

If you were going the other direction you could be in Sopiago just in the nick of time! LOL

Good luck on your ride and ride safe. Guess there won't be much time for pics but I'm sure it will be a long, but gorgeous ride.

Can you say, "Iron Butt"?

Eric, Not hard when the speed limit is 65 or 70 for most of the route, you can only do this on interstates I don't think it will work on secondary roads. But I don't think it will take all of 24 hours, probably between 21 and 22 hours. Should average somehwere between 68 to 72 mph.

There are two essential things. First is to get a good night's sleep the night before and leave well rested. Second essential is to abort the mission if fatigue sets in along the way. Eat a good breakfast before leaving, then be prepared for a long ride. Ride 200 miles, stop for fuel, repeat. No doubt, it will be an intense pace.

Kimber, Sydney, Thanks. Have a great time at Sopiago. It's a little over 2100 miles to Sopiago Springs from where I'm at. I might be a tad wore out by the time I got there!!

Re: 1500 Miles in 24 hours

Are you doing the paperwork to get your Iron Butt Association "Bun Burner Gold" for 1500 in 24 hours?

Andrew,

No. I'm not interested in their endorsement, pins, or patches. Why should I pay someone just to have them nod their head at what I've done? I'm not putting them down, I just don't care for or have any need or desire for that kind of thing. I can measure my own mileage very accurately using Streets and Trips or a GPS. I've never filed for any of the 1000+ milers I've done, I can think of at least 3. IBA won't accept a filing for a BBG unless that person has already completed a Sadddlsore 1000, so I can't file with them for this one anyway. My course is actually 1517 miles per Streets and Trips.

I have to concur with you and understand your position. I rode many, many 1k+ rides. Some of them back to back without ever bothering to get IBA to bless the trip. I recently did the SS1K because some friends were doing it and it sounded fun to me and it was. That said, I think I'd rather go do the riding and not worry about whether I lose receipts, or find a witness.
