Indiana Straights

Took a ride from northern Indiana to Indianapolis last weekend down I-65. Roads here aren't much to get excited about compared to CA - however even we have occasional choices. Oh well, its still nice to get out on the bike on a weekend, even here! Lets see now, which turn should I take??

Safe travels to you all from yours truly!

Re: Indiana Straights

Hey, you could always head north from there and tour some of those little towns in Michigan with the funky names. Like Sebewaing, and Frankenmuth...

Hey Toyuzu,

I always got a big kick out this one - French Lick, Indiana.

Try some names in Washington State too. If you can pronounce them, ride there and shout it out! Puyallup Sequim Snoqualmie Snohomish Sammamish.... Or visit both George and Martha. Then there's BC... and Minnesota.... Nice pic of 65, Helmet. Lived in South Bend for four years and miss it (but not in January-- all that snow and no mountains to ski on with it)

Re: Indiana Straights

Klutschengrabber,

No doubt those are some very different names. How do people even remember them? How do you ask directions to a place you can't even pronounce!?! Think of all the spelling errors! Now we know why the US Post Office came up with zip codes!

Snow in January? Goes without saying.

But you know what the sad thing is? It snowed here last night!! It's April 24th and there was snow on my deck this morning. Most of its already gone and its not 10:30 yet, but Holy Smokes! Its the end of April and the bike stayed in the garage all weekend! Our Local HRCA chapter was supposed to have a ride this morning - I for one did not show!

Re: Indiana Straights

I grew up not too far from HelmetDance, south of Chicago. What cracked me up was how folks had come to pronounce a couple of towns around there with names of French origin.

Bourbonais = bur-BONE-iss
Versailles = vur-SALES

And then there's good 'ol Goethe street in Chicago, pronounced GO-thee.

People always find a way to slaughter pronunciation of proper names. One of the joys of travel; learning how locals speak of their environs.

Re: Indiana Straights

I remember one fourth of July weekend about 13 years ago here in California - I went with a friend in his Toyota 4X4 exploring in the mountains near here. The sky went black, temperature plummeted, and we found ourselves in the middle of a blizzard - in July!!! We had to engage the four wheel drive, after only an hour six inches had accumulated already. We were only at about 6000 feet elevation too.

Just goes to show that you can never underestimate mountain weather.
