Cheetah M25 Rider
Laser Jammer
for Motorcyclists
Pashnit Moto Products

Stock Update May 2008:

The latest batch of Cheetah M-25 Riders are here in the US. In-stock Pashnit item! Your laser jammer will typically ship same day and can arrive anywhere in the USA within 3-5 days of your order.

Introducing the brand new
Cheetah M25 Rider, powered by Blinder Stealth Technology.

Cheetah has introduced a radical new laser jammer system specifically designed for motorcycles.Cheetah, one of the world's foremost authorities on radar detector and laser jammer components has created a system just for bikers.

Now you can stop missing alerts and start missing tickets!

A laser gun can record your speed in less than one third of a second, so even if a detector alerts you, it’s too late to react because your speed has already been recorded. A M25 Rider laser jammer prevents police laser from reading your speed, giving you valuable time to adjust your speed if you need to. Systems were available- but geared towards automobile owners. Using speed trap alerts effectively on a motorcycle has always been difficult...until now.

The Cheetah M25 Rider provides front and rear Blinder M25 heads for 360 degree laser defense, a dash mounted status LED, a wireless Vizalert Helmet Receiver so you know when you’re being targeted, a handlebar kill switch so you can safely shut off the jammer and a customised Blinder M25 control box integrated with Cheetah's wireless technology. The install is clean and there are no cables attaching you to the bike. All fully waterproof, robust and easy to fit with no hardwiring into the bike's electrics.

Understanding Laser Jammers 101

Besides all the ad copy mumbo jumbo, here's an easy way to understand these devices. (Complete FAQs are here) There are two Laser Jammer heads. One is mounted in the rear of the bike, one at the front. They can't be obstructed, as behind a fairing. Typically, they're mounted under the nose of the bike and one pointed rearward.

A handlebar on-off switch is also mounted. This is to shut the system off as soon as the Laser Jammer detects a lidar beam tracking the bike. The Laser Jammer lets the rider know a lock is being attempted with an wireless LED device mounted in the helmet known as the Vizalert. A dash mounted LED is also included in the kit. When the lidar signal is detected, the LED flashes, the rider adjusts speed accordingly, flips off the system, and allows the LEO to get a lock.

The Laser Jammer system can also be integrated into your existing Radar Detector with an interface device. This is a little black box bought specific to your brand of radar detector. This would be an optional accessory to the M25 Rider Laser Jammer package.

The M-25 Blinder for automobiles is the USA's best selling Laser Jammer. This kit is NOT the M-25 Blinder. These are all the same components, just reworked by Cheetah for a motorcycle application.

Please note that the Cheetah M25 Rider version for motorcyclists operates in exactly the same way, and has the same specifications as the Blinder M25 version - Cheetah does not modify Blinder electroncs in any way whatsoever. (Note that the M45 Blinder is designed for larger vehicles such as pickups, the M25 for smaller or normal sized vehicles.)

Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Jammers
How do laser guns work? Are laser jammers legal?
Why won't a laser detector warn me in time? How is a car system different than one for a motorcycle?
What is a laser jammer and how do they work? I want to fit a Laser Jammer but I am not technical. How do I do it?
I need a front and back Laser Jammer protection? I passed a camera van but my jammer did not alert me. Why not?

Are laser jammers legal?

Laser Jammers are legal in 80% of the United States, or 40 out of 50 states. There are no federal laws in the U.S.A. that prohibit the ownership and/or operation of laser jammers. However, some states have enacted their own laws that do prohibit the ownership and/or use of these devices. These states include: Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.

Most countries in Europe ban the use of laser jammers but not the buying, owning or selling.

In the UK, it is illegal to use a laser jammer and if you are caught the typical penalty to expect is points and a fine.

It is your responsibility to check the local laws that apply in your area and to comply with local legislation at all times.

How do laser guns work?
Laser (also known as LIDAR) guns fire a narrow beam of light in a straight line which is capable of recording a vehicle’s speed in less than one third of a second.

Police are trained to aim at the most reflective surfaces of a vehicle - generally the front number plate on an automobile or headlight on a motorcycle. Laser is the preferred mobile speed trap gun for urban conditions and on busy roads like motorways / interstates, because it gives a near instantaneous speed reading and it can pick out a single vehicle from a group of cars in heavy traffic because the laser beam only spreads slightly over the distance.

Some laser guns are theoretically capable of measuring the speed of a vehicle almost two miles away but in practice this is rarely done because it’s very hard to hit a moving target at that distance. A big factor in the range of a laser gun is often the limitation of the eyesight scope so most laser guns tend to be used at 1000 feet or less.

To be accurate, laser guns have to be stationary, steady, and aimed nearly straight on at the front or rear of the moving target so that’s why they are often set up on tables inside a camera van or mounted on tripods at the roadside. They are normally fired from road level on a long straight stretch of road, but they can also be used from motorway bridges, provided the user has first calculated the minimum firing range based on their height above the road.

Why won't my laser detector warn me in time?
Laser detection can help and it’s certainly better than nothing but it is not the guaranteed protection that many people assume.

A Laser detector can only warn you when it detects the presence of the laser beam (i.e. when it is in the line of fire of the beam.) However, a laser gun can record a vehicle’s speed in less than a third of a second, so by the time you receive an alert from a detector, your speed may already have been recorded. If yours is the first car targeted, it’s already too late by the time you receive a warning.

Also, if the laser gun is fired from a motorway over-bridge, the chances of you detecting the presence of the signal in advance are greatly reduced because of the angle that the beam is being fired at, into the ground.

In some circumstances you may not get a warning at all from a laser detector. Most laser detectors are placed inside the vehicle, mounted on the dashboard or windscreen. If the laser gun is fired at the car at short distance, the beam may not have spread sufficiently wide enough for any of the signal to come past the bonnet of the car and enter the windscreen to hit the laser detector.

What is a laser jammer and how do they work?
Laser jammers (also known as laser diffusers) were developed because laser detection was not enough.

Laser jammers are designed to stop a laser from recording your speed for a short period. giving motorcyclists time to adjust their speed safely. They give you a visual and audio alert so you have time to check your speed and, if necessary, safely reduce your speed to the posted limit, before getting a ticket. The manufacturers’ purpose is not to encourage speeding, but to allow people who are following the flow of traffic or who have drifted above the speed limit to adjust to the proper speed before being fined.

Jammers work by recognising which laser has been fired at your car and then transmitting it’s own matching infra-red or laser signal back towards the laser gun. The jammer’s signal confuses the gun, which is unable to calculate the speed of the vehicle and displays an error message or quite simply no speed reading.

It is perfectly normal for an officer using a laser gun to receive error messages all the time, even on cars without jammers, just because the signal has not bounced back correctly. It is not unusual for an operator to have to fire two or three times at a vehicle to obtain a reading. These normal error messages are what jammers replicate.

Diffusers are only effective against laser guns and do not work to detect or interfere with radar guns or any other kind of camera system, like GATSO, Truvelo or SPECS, etc. If you require a Motorcycle Radar Detector System - Click Here to see the all new Adaptiv TPX Motorcycle Radar.

How is a car system different than one for a motorcycle?
The Cheetah M25 Blinder Laser Jammer is a very popular system designed for automobiles and readily available anywhere. However, we motorcyclists have very different needs. The M25 Rider has shorter wires, waterproof connectors and control boxes. The system also includes a waterproof handlebar mounted on-off switch, and the wireless Vizalert LED warning system is included in this kit. The helmet-mounted Vizalert is motion activated. Plus the M25 Rider Laser Jammer shuts itself off when the motorcycle is turned off. A boom attachment is also included for those with a open face or flip up style helmet. No hard wiring into the bike wiring harness required. No worries with CANBUS equiped motorcycles such as BMWs or some of the latest '08 Harley Davidsons equiped with CANBUS wiring harness. Just connect to the motorcycle battery and done!

Why do I need two laser jammers - one on the front and another on the back?

For the vast majority of the time, police laser is shot at the front of approaching motorcycle. If the gun records a normal error message, the officer has more time to carry out repeated fires and it becomes easier to get a reading. The closer you get, the bigger target you are.

Targeting from the rear is done, and it is becoming more common as enforcement tactics adapt and become more sophisticated. However rear attacks are comparatively rare because speed readings become more difficult with each fire as the distance is always increasing and the target is shrinking. The M25 Rider System already comes with two jammer heads, one for the front, one for the rear of the motorcycle.

I passed a camera van but my detector or diffuser did not alert me. Why not?
The police do not necessarily check every motorcycle that goes by. In the UK for example, police guidelines state that an officer can only measure the speed of a vehicle that they believe to be exceeding the posted limit. That is why you can drive past a safety camera van and not get a warning from a detector or a diffuser. UK Guidelines also state that a laser or radar gun should not be fired through a closed window. If they are measuring your speed, the gun should be fired through an open window or open door. This limitation does not apply in the USA.

I want to fit a Laser Jammer but I am not technical. How do I do it?
A badly fitted jammer will be a waste of money and more often than not, will not jam. Not being horizontal and vertical are the main problems. These general guidelines are here to help you get the basic principles right and hopefully save you time and expensive mistakes. The instruction book for your laser jammer will give you specific advice on fitting your particular device so please ensure you read them through before you start.

1. Before fitting the head you need to make sure the motorcycle is on a level surface.

2. Take all the parts out of the box, lay them out and check in the instructions that all the parts are there. The Jammer head dimensions are: 4" X 2" X .70" or 103mm x 49mm x 19mm if anyone uses metric. Cable diameter is 3mm

There's never a need to drill any holes to run the cable. There is always plenty of space around a bike and panels clip off. You get brackets, zip ties and everything you need in the fitting kit that comes with them.

One of the gizmo's in the kit is a clever little "engine running" sensor that automatically powers up the laser jammer only when the engine is running. It slides directly on to the battery terminals so you don't even have any hardwiring into your bike's electrics. (obviously you can if you're the kind of guy who likes to make things hard for yourself!) Perfect for the avoiding the CANBUS and the fibre optic spaghetti that's in the big BMWs these days.

3. Deciding where to place your jammer heads is always a balancing act between concealment and effectiveness. Take the head of the jammer and the support brackets and put them together in a suitable orientation for the position on the motorcycle. We recommend that you position the head as close as possible to the nose of the motorcycle. That is the position where most lasers are fired at on the bike – the flatest reflective surface, typically the nose or headlight, ideal for getting a laser beam to bounce back from.

Some things to think about: What do you have to do to fit the head, look at the position, will the head get hot, can it be seen, will you be able to get the head level, how easy is it going to be to clean the head, is there a good fixing and firm surface to bolt the head to? Make sure it's well hidden but easily removable. Some riders will even used an industrial velcro to attach the heads for easy removal.

4. Then check where you will route the wires, put them is a safe position, avoid areas where they may rub and short out, keep them away from hot areas, the wires will have to go from the front of the motorcycle to the area of the bike where the control box will be fitted. Wire length is 2 meters, about 3 feet.

5. Take your time, if you are not sure ask a more qualified person to help you. Any good Auto Electrician will easily be able to fit it. Also note you can post questions to the Pashnit Discussion Forum and talk directly with Al from Cheetah who built this system for us.

Its very important to keep the lens clean, before every trip check the lens, wipe it clean if it is dirty, check it often in the winter when there is road salt about.

Are there any accessories I should know about?

The M-25 Rider is a complete kit to get you set up with your motorcycle laser jammer. However, say you already have a radar detector setup and now you want to add in a laser jammer. Or vice versa... you already have a laser jammer and want to add radar. Consider a laser jammer interface or a radar detector interface. Basically these are just the transmitters that send the alerts up to the display.

This interface module will allow your existing radar detector and new Laser Jammer to integrate together. You have to specify which model you have because all the manufacturers use different connectors from each other so we need to make sure you'll have the right connector cables for your detector or jammer to interface properly.

Cheetah M25 Rider Addtional info & pics

A personal word from your host:

As with any product, especially electronics based, do your homework. There is a ton of information ranging from forum conversations to videos of Radar and Laser Jammer communities. The Cheetah Blinder products are well-known and this has commonly been a product aimed at automobile owners. Info for motorcyclists is actually somewhat sparse, and at times relegated to personal owners modifying existing system to fit the motorcyclist needs and sharing their know-how.

Ask questions here and converse directly with the individuals that build these devices about how Laser Jammers and Radar works and applies to bikers. As far as I know, this is the first time a manufacture has designed a complete kit aimed at the motorcycle market. -Tim

Placement of the Blinder Jammer head under the top case

Final Rider Comments

I just first want to thank you from a post that you made awhile ago before this one. I was able to install the M25 Blinder on my Hayabusa and some of your pics gave me a great idea. Unlike, other peoples way of installing the blinders I went to Lowes and got me contruction strength velcro and installed the front blinder that way. That Velcro is very strong and the blinder is installed nicely. I also have the other blinder head installed in the back of my Hayabusa under the license plate. Instead of using velcro I bought to bracket metal strips and attached it to the license plate and than installed the blinder below the license plate. It looks real nice.

I think you need both the front and back protected. I highly suggest that you place one on the back. Also, instead of using the full blinder kit, I have the wireless additional kit that I use with the blinder and I use a bluetooth headset that plays mp3s and also will notitify me when they are alarming. -posted on RadarBusters.net
