Glenn Stasky & I first met some years ago when he signed up for a Pashnit Motorcycle Tour. Glenn is the owner of Clearwater Audio, a company that specializes in custom speakers for the automotive industry. Glenn also has a passion for motorcycles and we've rode together several times over the years as he came back to sign up for several more Pashnit Tours.
Industry Change
The years have gone by but a few months ago, he began to share with me his latest new project. A new patent pending product that would make filament-based motorcycle driving lights obsolete! Really? Tell me more!
Technology marches on. It changes our expectations, our sense of normality. LEDs are going to replace the way you think about lighting, Glen stated. LED's use very little power, are more durable than bulb-based lights, and can easily give off more light! Come see me, he said. So on the bike I went to check out his manufacturing facility.
HALOGEN SHORTCOMINGS
• Inefficient: More than 90% of the energy is wasted in heat
• Short lifespan: Only 500-2000 hours
• Fragile: Bulb filaments fracture under vibration
• Output dims over time: Halogen starts to lose output from day one
• Fixed output: Cannot easily control brightness
Dimmable Driving Lights?
As soon as I rolled into the shop, Clearwater staff began measuring and recording data about my bike. Clearwater Lights are universal in application. The one thing that varies is the bracketry for your motorcycle. Using a simple triangular bracket, the design allows the lights to be mounted to the fork of just about any motorcycle and then pointed at a level that best suits you.
As the staff worked with their protractors, micrometers and mounting diagrams on my bike, Glen began to tell me more about the new patent pending Clearwater Lights. I have riding partners who do not use their driving lights during the day. They're either too bright to oncoming traffic, or they even drain the battery due the power draw. The driving lights I had on my own Honda ST1100 were so bright, other drivers would constant flash their lights at me.
What if you could dim your driving lights at will? What if your driving lights used only 1/5th the power of a normal Halogen? What if there was no filment to break or bulbs to replace? Would that pique your interest? You bet!
Clearwater Lights have developed a unique brightness control circuit by using a rotary volume control to digitally change brightness in a wide range of intensity. The soft rubber knob is easily adjusted, even with gloves. It conveniently mounts on a handlebar or in a faring.
Use just 1/5th the Power?
A light-emitting diode or LED is a semiconductor diode that emits incoherent narrow-spectrum light. This effect is a form of electroluminescence. Put more simply, LEDs are very small, yet emit very bright light. They also require very small amounts of power- to the tune of just 1/8th amp. Bright light, low power? Where do I sign up?
90% Heat Loss?
Did I hear you correctly? Halogen driving lights are common in the motorcycle industry, and we all know they are very bright. But Halogens are still a traditional high resistance wire that glows when electricity flows through it. The light output is just a byproduct, so amazingly, 90% of the power sent to the halogen light is wasted as heat! Imagine if we could create a new type of light that doesn't even use a filment-based bulb?
Safety. Come home alive.
Adding driving lights to your motorcycle is more than just adding more light. Driving lights are a safety issue on more than one level. First off all, be seen. All motorcyclists know that. Lime Green is all the rage right now. A decade ago, would anyone have even admitted to even owning such a day-glo suit? Times and perceptions change. Safety is a huge issue for today's motorcyclists, an everyday topic. Riders are more aware than ever that being seen is their responsibility.
Always assume the opposing driver not only can't see you, but you are invisible to them. It's time to pony up and even the score. Driving lights provide that additional level of visibilty. LED Driving Lights are in-your-face burn-the-back-of-your-retinas moments of reality. Be seen and come home alive.
Evolution of the Headlight.
Clearwater Lights are not only developing LED Driving Lights for your motorcycle, they've also created a plug and play replacement for the BMW GS pictured at right. These new lights are available in both HID & Halogen versions and are DOT approved. These are complete kits which also include the HID Power Supply. Once a BMW GS owner uses one of these, Glen stated, they'll never want to used a normal stock headlight again.
While Clearwater has started with the BMW GS as their first direct replacement headlight assembly, they haven't stopped there.
If One is Good. Six is Better.
Glenn took me into one of their lab rooms and began to assemble several loose parts on the work table. He held up a small LED light, only about an inch in diameter and plugged it into a power supply. Check this out, he said. That single LED light illuminated the entire work table. That's amazing I exclaimed, look at how bright that is!
You think that's bright, then watch this. Glenn finished assembling what was now clearly a driving light. Indeed it had not just one single LED bulb- but six! If one is good, six is better he stated. He proceeded to shine it on the wall and it lit up the room. Bright! Remember, you can dim the light output during daytime usage, and it's using 1/5 the juice of a normal halogen driving light.
We have our own prorietary internal circuit boards he explained that are bonded to an additional aluminum plate for strength and heat management. The light itself has been forged from solid billet aluminum and the paint both hard anodized and power coated on certain models.
HPLED BENEFITS
• Much more efficient: 4-6 times superior to halogen
• Lifespan: Hundreds of times longer than halogen
• Dimmable: Safely use in varied conditions
• Compact: Low profile, easy to mount
Made in the US of A.
Follow me, Glenn said and motioned from their development labs. Walking a few feet away into a huge room, there were numerous CNC Milling Machines that spanned across the building. Our Clearwater Lights are made right here in the good ole US of A and start off as solid blocks of billet aluminum.
Each
light is either CNC machined or forged from billet. Brackets are
machined from 6061 series aluminum and use durable stainless steel
hardware. Doing things in-house in their Northern California facility saves time and money, plus those savings are transferred directly to the consumer.
What's next for Clearwater Lights?
Clearwater LED Driving Lights for motorcycles are an exciting new product for we bikers. They promise long life, low power draw, and amble brightness for day and night use. The ability to have your driving lights on a dimmer is a revolutionary idea- so much so, you wonder why someone hasn't thought of that before!
As to what's next for Clearwater Lights, the staff is hard at work building up their fitment list. BMW GS owners came first for the new Clearwater Driving Lights, with many more bike models currently being developed.
Glenn pulled out a headlight they've developed and walked over to the PashnitBusa. How's your headlight he asked. It's terrible I said. I wonder he said aloud to no one in particular. You think I could borrow your bike for a week or two?
It's all yours Glenn. Just let me know what you come up with next.
