Breckenridge Rd, east of Bakersfield, is a quintessential California goat trail that completely splits the room: it’s either the bane of your existence or an absolute godsend when you ride it.

Connecting Comanche Drive near Bakersfield to Caliente-Bodfish Rd, this remote 37-mile ranch road climbs a steady 6,000 feet to the southern crest of the Sierra Nevada Range. It is narrow, bumpy, single-lane in most parts, and heavily littered with cyclic sand, potholes, and debris. And an occasional cow. There’s also a fire lookout at the summit the dual sports can ride to via a dirt fire road.

While winter brings snow closures at the 7,100-foot summit and August brings blistering 108°F valley heat, March and April offer the absolute perfect window to tackle this ride. Early spring transforms the treeless, rolling foothills into a vibrant landscape of lush green grass. We love to ride this as an out and back ride just to take this photo.

Even better, springtime weather brings the rare, clear days needed to cut through the southern Central Valley’s famous haze, offering dazzling, panoramic views stretching up to 90 miles across the state to the Coast Range.

If you ride the full length, the road transitions into the pine forests of the Sequoia National Forest, expect total isolation—you might only see ranchers and cattle. Fill your tank, bring some snacks, and ensure a healthy dose of self-sufficiency.

Is Breckenridge Rd for every rider? Not likely.

But those that love the goat, nothing like this one anywhere.

Breckenridge has an amazing visual of curves.
