Highway 49 - Yuba Pass, Sierra City to Hwy 89

Highway 49-Yuba Pass is an absolute masterpiece of a ride, combining pristine asphalt, sweeping curves, and deep Gold Rush history. This lightly traveled mountain pass sits at a low 6,100 feet, allowing it to clear early in the season while often remaining free of heavy congestion.
The route begins with distinct canyon descents and ascents over the South and Middle Forks of the Yuba River before tracking the North Fork. Along the way, riders pass through historic Grass Valley, home to the sprawling Empire Mine State Historic Park—California’s largest and richest hard-rock mining operation, boasting 367 miles of tunnels beneath the park.
Just up the road is picturesque Nevada City, a tiny Victorian-era town packed with 1850s architecture and original charm. There’s also tunnels under Nevada City you can walk through.
For riders seeking an adventure off the main road, iconic detours like Tyler-Foote Crossing Rd lead up the ridge to the living museum of North Bloomfield and the massive, carved canyons of Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park. Opposite direction leads to Bridgeport Covered Bridge.
Further north, the highway rolls directly into the riverside enclave of Downieville, a classic stop for gas, food, and scenery. Check out the sheriff gallows in Downieville while you’re there. The stretch into Downieville (s-curves for miles) then the enthusiastic ascent to Sierra City- perfection. Plus, this place is a haven for mountain bikers.
It is a spectacular afternoon loop that delivers smooth twisties and a heavy dose of California heritage. Circle back to Truckee, or better yet, north to La Porte Rd, Oroville Quincy Hwy, or further north Hwy 70-Feather River Canyon. Chester & Mount Lassen are just up the road.
