Highway 49 between Nevada City and Downieville is widely considered the crown jewel of the Gold Country. Starting the ride at Java John’s amidst the Victorian charm of Nevada City, the road climbs briefly out of town before immediately plunging into a high-intensity descent toward the South Yuba River. This section is a masterclass in rhythmic engineering, characterized by tight, technical twisties that cling to the canyon walls. The elevation changes are dramatic, offering riders a physical workout as they navigate the carved-out granite landscape.

As you sweep north, the terrain transitions into a dense forest canopy, crossing the 49er Bridge before climbing toward North San Juan. Highway 49 levels out momentarily across the "ridges" before another exhilarating drop into the North Yuba River canyon—yes, it’s a "double canyon" day! This final stretch into Downieville is a visual spectacular where the asphalt follows the river’s edge so closely you can almost feel the cool spray from the rapids. The rock-walled canyons and narrow passages serve as a constant reminder of the region’s rugged hydraulic mining history.

Arriving in the historic, tiny riverside hamlet of Downieville for ice cream at the Gold Rush Café, you realize this section of Highway 49 is more than just a road—it’s an immersal into repetitious s-curves journeying through California’s Golden past. It offers some of the most concentrated "big air" canyon views in the Northern Sierra Nevada Range. Head into the Gold Rush Café for ice cream, then get ready to follow the contours of the Yuba River for the next leg toward Sierra City.
