Forest Rd 1, NorCal

Forest Road 1 in Northern California has a distinct Mattole Rd vibe. It’s not for everyone—for some, it’s a "one-and-done" ride, but for others, Forest Road 1 is like no other road you've ever ridden.
Known as Titlow Hill Rd on the northern half -off Hwy 299 right outside of Willow Creek, CA at the 2859 ft. Berry Summit- and South Fork Mountain Rd on the southern half, some local NorCal riders also call the southern leg Lamb Creek Grade since it starts at Lamb Creek. My AAA paper map simply labels it Forest Road 1. Now that we’re done with the nomenclature: ride it north or south, it makes no difference. It's awesome sauce either way.
If "one-and-done" doesn't deter you, the next step is to read my long-form article linked below. Forest Rd 1 is cut along the spine of South Fork Mountain, a massive ridge that stretches for over 50 miles without a major dip or break, hovering above 5,000 feet for its entire length. South Fork Mountain is essentially one giant, 50-plus-mile unbroken wall of earth.
If you want to understand the true scale of the Northern California wilderness, you have to ride this remote artery. It offers a perspective that few ever see—and even fewer even notice. FR1 connects Hwy 299 with Hwy 36, and yes, it is paved all the way through. It's paved poorly, but we're calling it paved.
Forest Road 1 is an exercise in isolation. This isn't your typical valley floor ride or Sierra Foothills twisty cruise. The terrain is a rugged mix of high-alpine meadows, dense pine thickets, and wind-swept ridges. In certain places, the 5,000-plus-foot elevation opens up into logged clearings that offer amazing views to both the west and the east.
While the route is paved, it is "mountain pavement"—weathered, patched, single-lane narrow, and often scattered with debris, six-foot-diameter potholes, trees, logs, and rocks. It demands a focused and rhythmic pace. It’s the kind of road where you can ride for the full two hours it takes to traverse—without seeing a soul—just you and the undulating ribbon of asphalt. It is rare that we're able to ride this road prior to Memorial Day due to snow, but 2026 is a light snow year, so who knows?
For those who crave that "middle of nowhere" feeling, Forest Road 1 is the ultimate escape. It’s raw, remote, spectacular, and a definitive California adventure. https://www.pashnit.com/ca-forest-road-1
