Highway 229, affectionately known as Rossi’s Driveway, is a unique five-mile stretch of pavement in San Luis Obispo Co that connects Hwy 58 to Hwy 41. Anchored near the small ranching community of Creston, this “state highway” features a northern half with quick straights. The route then climbs steadily up to a low rise marked by large dual water tanks before the second half plunges into a narrow canyon, flowing down the hillside along a dry creek bed.
Characterized by a very good, strangely smooth, single-lane width, the road bed clings tightly to the ridgeline. Its tight corners, gravity bowls, banked curves, and roller-coaster terrain make it a true pleasure to navigate. However, because it accommodates two-way traffic and no center line, riders must anticipate opposing vehicles, sand, and bicyclists on this road.
This short but intensely technical ribbon of asphalt provides an unforgettable riding experience, prompting many of our riders to immediately turn around and ride it all over again.
