White Mountain Road is a short but unforgettable climb into one of California’s most otherworldly landscapes, a 10-mile ascent from California State Route 168 to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. The road begins around 7,200 feet and gains roughly 3,000 feet in elevation, quickly transitioning from a straight approach into a twisting mountain route defined by steep grades, tight curves, and multiple 180-degree hairpins.
As the pavement narrows to a single lane, the ride becomes more intimate and exposed, with sweeping views opening across the Owens Valley toward the Sierra Nevada. About eight miles in, the Sierra View Overlook provides a dramatic vantage point at over 9,000 feet, where the air thins and the landscape turns stark and treeless.
Continuing higher, the road pushes past 10,000 feet—making it one of the highest paved roads in California—before ending at the Schulman Grove Visitor Center. Here, riders arrive among the ancient bristlecone pines, trees that can exceed 4,000 to 5,000 years in age, thriving in the harsh, dry conditions of the White Mountains.
The ride is both a physical climb and a journey through time, culminating among the oldest living organisms on Earth.
