Bay Hill Rd bypasses Bodega Bay.

It’s found on a sweping curve on Highway 1 flowing into Bodega Bay and it’s easy to miss- or even know it’s there. Bay Hill Rd is one of several inland local roads that pre‑dated or paralleled the modern state highway completed in 1951.

In Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 thriller The Birds, Bay Hill Rd serves as the audience's introduction to the town. When Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) drives her silver (very rare) 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 into Bodega Bay, the sweeping, winding descent she maneuvers is Bay Hill Road. (pull up the clip on YouTube)

Bay Hill Rd provides an elevated, "big air" perspective of the harbor, which at the time was much more isolated and sparsely developed in the early 1960s when the film was shot by Hitchcock in and around Bodega Bay. If you drive Bay Hill Rd today— the view of the Bodega Bay Harbor remains almost identical to the opening shots of the film. The clip of the road & Aston Martin is instantly recognizable if you've ridden Bay Hill Rd a few times.

Which leads me to ask how many times have you ridden Highway 1 north of SF? Seriously, how many? More than I can count would be my answer. And when you’re stuck trolling behind tourist traffic through the bottleneck of Bodega Bay north of San Francisco, there’s a shortcut around the town.

Not a fast road, Bay Hill is single lane delicious goat, nothing has changed since Tippi Hedren drove the Aston Martin along this forgotten road which pops back out onto Highway 1 on the north end of town bypassing the tourist traffic crawling through the town.
