Big Hill Fire Lookout, Ice House Rd, Pollock Pines, CA

Ice House Rd, east of Pollock Pines, CA, is one of our all-time favorite rides, plus 30 miles of it were repaved in 2025. It is pure riding bliss! But this post isn’t about that. It’s about the fire lookout along this ride you’ve been missing.
And, while California has many fire lookouts, this one has a paved road all the way to the summit. Located along Ice House Road within the El Dorado National Forest, the Big Hill Fire Lookout holds a storied history of resilience. Situated atop the ridge lines near the Crystal Basin Recreation Area, the lookout serves as a crucial vantage point for spotting wildfires across the rugged Sierra Nevada foothills.
The site gained significant notoriety during the 1992 Cleveland Fire. Triggered by 60 mph winds, the fire produced massive 100-foot flames that rapidly swept northward out of the American River Canyon along Highway 50. The wildfire consumed 24,000 acres and destroyed over 240 structures in its path—including the very fire lookout tower that first spotted the blaze, along with most of the surrounding support structures at Big Hill. Following the destruction, a massive reforestation effort by volunteers helped replant & transform the landscape, and today, the new forest is thriving.
Big Hill Fire Lookout offers sweeping, unobstructed mountain vistas of Union Valley Reservoir and the nearby Crystal Range. Once you reach the summit, don’t miss the short walk north to the viewpoint providing an impressive panorama of Union Valley Reservoir below. The view of the lake is expansive and breathtaking. Mountain peaks frame the horizon; the most prominent to the southeast is the triangular 9,985-foot Pyramid Peak.
Bring a snack, bring lunch (there are even some picnic tables with mountaintop views), and ride up here to make this one of your destinations on Ice House Rd. Every time we ride here, the summit is deserted, and the on-duty staff are happy to see us, explain their role, and even demonstrate all the equipment they utilize to spot fires. After your visit to Big Hill, continue the ride to Loon Lake Reservoir—the beginning of the Rubicon Trail—then double back downhill on Wentworth Springs Rd to Georgetown.
