Bottle Rock Rd - Kelseyville, CA

Bottle Rock Rd is one of those easily missed gems that reminds you why this region between Calistoga and Clear Lake in Northern California is a motorcyclist’s paradise. Running parallel to Highway 175 from Cobb Mountain to Kelseyville, this ribbon of pavement offers a completely different experience from the main highway. While Hwy 175 carries the traffic, Bottle Rock is the alternative ride. Two lanes with a center line, it’s a bit goaty- rather bumpy plus lots of driveways on the southern end. Reduced to a forgotten backroad winding through the rugged volcanic landscape of Lake County.
Bottle Rock Rd traces the northwestern slopes of Cobb Mountain, weaving through forests of pine with Clear Lake in the distance. The pavement varies from smooth sweepers to rougher sections, keeping riders engaged and smiling inside their helmets. It’s the kind of road where every corner reveals something new—a stand of towering trees, a rocky outcrop, or a quiet stretch of countryside untouched by development. There’s a tiny cemetery along this road that I often stop to visit. It makes the perfect quiet midafternoon break during a day of riding.
Named after the volcanic formation known as Bottle Rock, the route carries a sense of California history and isolation. Traffic is typically light, making it easy to settle into a rhythm and enjoy the ride. For riders exploring the backroads around Clear Lake, Bottle Rock Rd is a worthy detour that captures the raw, unfiltered character of the region. It’s not about getting somewhere quickly—it’s about enjoying every mile along the way.
Nearby Hwy 175 is the faster route, with better curves but only if you can ride it when no one is looking, however it almost always has steady traffic headed for Clear Lake.
On the northern end, Bottle Rock rejoins Hwy 175 along the south shore of Clear Lake, passing by one of the last operating drive-in movie theaters - Lakeport Auto Movies- in California before heading west onto the super twisty Hopland Grade. At Hopland, transition across 101 onto Mountain House Rd to reach 128 or… skip north to Ukiah to ride the always enjoyable & curvaceous Hwy 253 to Boonville.
