The Giant Amazonian Woman is one of Auburn, California’s most unusual and unforgettable landmarks.

Everyone seemed to know about them except me. I just happened to be riding through Auburn one day & went, What is that!?

Created in the early 1970s by local dentist and self-taught sculptor Dr. Kenneth H. Fox, the towering concrete figure reflects both his fascination with mythology and his bold approach to large-scale art.

His Amazonian woman evokes the strength and independence of the legendary female warriors of Greek mythology. With powerful posture and commanding presence, the figure seems to watch over Auburn, embodying both myth and monument.

When first erected, the statue sparked controversy due to its size and partial nudity, challenging the sensibilities of some residents at the time. Over the decades, however, it has become part of Auburn’s cultural identity — a piece of outsider art that adds character and conversation to the town’s landscape. Auburn has around 7–8 large Dr. Fox concrete statues throughout the city.
