Highway 121 - Napa, CA

Highway 121 eastbound out of Napa, CA is the ultimate motorcycle escape route, throwing you directly into the rugged ridges of the Vaca Mountains. While it’s certainly not the only way out of town, it ticks the boxes for the motorcycle mind: a sequence of tight, repetitious S-curves that serve as the gateway to Lake Berryessa and a vast network of even twistier backroads. But there’s a catch. This ribbon of asphalt is also the primary artery for weekend boat traffic heading toward the lake.
If you look closely at the below photo, you’ll notice a total lack of shadows. That doesn't just mean a typical overcast wine-country morning—it means hitting the tarmac at dawn to get a jump on the trucks and trailers. The timestamp on this shot is 6:38 am from an early morning ride- had the curves all to myself.
Slicing through the crisp, cool morning air before the crowds wake up lets you truly exploit the road’s potential. Highway 121 offers up sweeping corners that are smooth, the traction is predictable, and you can establish a flowing, uninterrupted left-right-left rhythm with some new paving after Wooden Valley Rd. If you can discipline yourself to launch this early in your ride day, you’ll bypass the congestion entirely, warming up your tires on a pristine, empty ribbon of tarmac before connecting with Highway 128 and across the bottom of Lake Berryessa and beyond.
If you continue past the 121/128 junction at Moskowite Corner toward the northern reaches of the hills, you are entering what was once one of the richest mining regions in California. During the late 19th century, the mountains surrounding this corridor were teeming with quicksilver (mercury) mines.
Highway 121 started out as a dirt wagon trail that was heavily utilized by teams of horses hauling heavy flasks of mercury out of the mountains down to the Napa River to be shipped to the goldfields of the Sierra Nevada.
Early morning rides may not be your thing, but it you want the road all to yourself, a clean run is almost guaranteed this time of day. Hwy 121 is just the beginning: spending a day riding through the Napa regions and northward will fill your entire day with miles of smiles.
