Highway 180 is the gateway to one of the most dramatic spectacles in the Sierra Nevada: the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway.
Leaving Wilsonia and the giant sequoias behind, the road plunges nearly 4000 feet into the heart of the deepest canyon in North America. This is a descent like no other, featuring smile-inducing s-curve sweepers that cling to the canyon walls and provide unobstructed views of the Kings River far below.
As you drop deeper into the gorge, the landscape shifts from lush forest to raw, sun-bleached stone. The pavement is a technical marvel, twisting and diving toward the river cut into a sheer vertical rock face before leveling out for the final run into Cedar Grove.
Once you hit the canyon floor, the road follows the flow of the South Fork of the Kings River, flanked by towering granite cliffs that rival those of Yosemite but without the heavy congestion. Swelled with snowmelt in spring, during the summer heat, it’s perfect spot to stop and walk to the edge of the river at Boyden Cavern.
The original vision for Highway 180 involved extending the road past Cedar Grove, climbing steeply out of the Kings River Canyon and crossing the crest at Kearsarge Pass at 11,760 ft to reach Onion Valley & Independence at Highway 395 along the Eastern Sierra. While funding in the late 1920s and 1930s eventually dried up, construction of 180 in the canyon did reach Cedar Grove in 1939. However, the pavement was never pushed past that point. Though these two locations- Cedar Grove & Independence- are only 23 miles apart as the crow flies, no crossing will ever be completed. The single road and lack of touristy experiences other than outdoorsy activities like backpacking and camping enable Kings Canyon to be the least visited of the major Sierra Nevada parks.
Cedar Grove serves as the ultimate turnaround point—a peaceful sanctuary at the end of the line where the road simply stops creating an out-and-back ride. You ride the twisties twice. Highway 180 into Kings Canyon offers a pure, visceral riding experience that defines the allure of the Southern Sierra Range.
