The Lake Clementine Dam outside of Auburn, CA, officially known as the North Fork Dam, is tucked deep into the canyon of the Auburn State Recreation Area along Foresthill Rd, just a few miles past the Foresthill Bridge outside Auburn. I’ve ridden between Auburn and Foresthill (headed for Mosquito Ridge) for 30 years and never knew this dam was even there. Unlike the massive structures you might typically envision—such as Hoover or Shasta—the Lake Clementine Dam was specifically designed for water to cascade right over its crest.

Standing 155 feet tall, this constant-angle arch dam was completed in 1939. It wasn't built to generate power or supply drinking water, but for the specific purpose of trapping hydraulic gold-mining debris to prevent it from traveling further downstream. While we have no concept of this issue today, during the twilight years of the Gold Rush, it was a massive environmental concern. Today, the dam creates a hidden oasis for boaters and history buffs alike, sitting just upstream from one of the tallest bridges in the United States, the Foresthill Bridge, which looms 730 feet above the river.

When the North Fork of the American River runs high in the spring, the water doesn’t just drain; it thunders over the top of the dam in a massive, perfectly uniform sheet. This "cascading waterfall" effect creates a wall of mist and a roar that echoes through the canyon, making it one of the most photographed engineering sites in Northern California.

The road leading down to the dam is a tight, winding, single-lane descent that offers fleeting glimpses of the structure far below you in the gorge.

The asphalt is so narrow that the first time I rode it, I genuinely thought I had turned onto a paved bicycle path but the access road leads to a small parking lot at the bottom of the canyon. Whether you are viewing it from the road above or standing at its base in the cool canyon air, the Lake Clementine Dam represents a unique intersection of California’s gold rush legacy and dramatic architectural beauty. There is simply nothing else like it in the state, and I rode right past it for three decades. Don’t do that.
