Socrates Mine Rd is not a fast road, no knee dragging here; rather this road is a dead end.

Found outside Middleton, CA, you’ve likely ridden by it many times over. Why bother with dead-end roads? Because of what’s at the end. You’ve ridden Highway 175 from Middletown, up and over Cobb Mountain and to Clear Lake many times over, then you have to say, what else ya got?

Rising from the rolling hills of Middletown, CA, Socrates Mine Rd is a winding dead-end out-and-back artery that climbs through a landscape defined by both its ancient geological volatility and its industrial evolution. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Socrates Mine was a significant producer of quicksilver (cinnabar). As the gold rush faded and demand for mercury faded, the earth’s internal heat offered a new brand of "gold." Beneath this mountain is another type of gold.

Today, Socrates Mine Rd serves as a primary access point to The Geysers, the world’s largest geothermal field west of Middleton, CA. Socrates Mine Road is found along Highway 175 a few miles outside Middletown, climbing a winding route toward the Calpine Geothermal Plant. Here, the subterranean heat that once created cinnabar deposits is harnessed to produce clean, renewable electricity. As you climb, billowing white plumes of steam often billow against the horizon, marking where high-pressure steam vapor is piped from deep underground to spin massive turbines.

Socrates Mine Rd is a steep climb, approaching a 20% grade making it the one of the steepest paved roads in California (and a challenging route for local bicyclists). This intensity is physically marked by a rarity for a rural, two-lane road: three runaway truck ramps positioned to catch vehicles that lose their brakes on the descent from the Geothermal Plant atop the mountain. The pavement itself reflects its remote, industrial purpose, often described as "mildly deteriorated" with sandy shoulders and no center line.

A few hundred yards beyond (Castle Spring Rd) the Geothermal Plant is a pullout with a wide expansive view overlooking the Collayomi Valley with Middletown at the center.

The view alone is worth the quick out and back ride.
